Individual Counseling with Greg Sommers

Individual counseling for adolescents (14+) and adults in Idaho.

Most people come to counseling because something in life feels out of sync.

Maybe you’re dealing with anxiety or thoughts that are hard to shut off. Maybe a relationship isn’t going well. You might find yourself responding to people or situations in ways you don’t completely understand. Or maybe you know something needs some attention, but you’re not quite sure what that is yet.

I think counseling is a really good place to figure some of that out.

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

I’m interested in helping people better understand themselves. We all develop ways of thinking, behaving, and relating to other people that have helped us navigate life. Some of those patterns continue to serve us really well. Others don’t. And sometimes we keep repeating them without really understanding why.

Who I work with

EDUCATORS
I’ve spent much of my career working with teachers, counselors, administrators, and school communities. I understand how meaningful the work can be, and how much it can take out of you. Counseling offers a place to focus on you without having to be the person who has it all together.

MEN
Sometimes the same tensions, frustrations, or patterns keep showing up in our relationships, at work, or in the way we experience life. Counseling offers a place to slow things down, understand what may be driving those patterns, and consider what you might want to do differently.

ADOLESCENTS (14+)
Adolescence can bring a lot at once: new experiences, relationships, emotions, and ways of thinking. I work with young people to better understand what’s going on, make sense of what may be driving some of the tension, and feel more grounded and confident moving forward.

What counseling with me looks like

I tend to lean into cognitive behavioral therapy, with a sprinkle of internal family systems and sensorimotor awareness to explore not only what you’re thinking, but what happens inside you as you interact with those thoughts.

I’m interested in helping clients explore what’s happening right now along with what might be going on underneath it. Sometimes that means looking practically at thoughts, behaviors, and patterns. Other times it means slowing down and getting curious about where some of those patterns came from, where they show up inside you, and why they’re still showing up.

From there, we can work together to understand what’s influencing your life, what may not be serving you very well anymore, and what might help you move forward in a healthier way that feels more aligned with the person you want to be.

I’ve been a Licensed Professional Counselor in Idaho since 2023, but the work of sitting with people, listening to their stories, helping them navigate difficult things, and helping them better understand themselves has been a part of what I’ve done for most of my adult life.

If that sounds like the kind of counseling you’re looking for, I’d be glad to sit down and talk.

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

I’ve spent most of my career working in and around schools. For more than 30 years, I’ve worked with students, teachers, counselors, administrators, and school communities, and now I’d like to offer some individualized attention to the people doing this work. When an educator sits down with me, they can know they are sitting with someone who gets it, and there are probably some things they don’t have to spend their time explaining.

I understand how meaningful the work can be. I also understand how much it can take out of you.

There are pressures that come with working in education that people outside of it may not fully appreciate. You’re constantly responding to the needs of other people, and it can become pretty easy to lose track of how you’re doing in the middle of all of it.

With me, you don’t have to be the teacher, counselor, administrator, coach, or person who has it together. We can just focus on you.

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

If you’re considering counseling, chances are you’re finding that you have a relationship, behavior, or thought pattern that you’re struggling with.

You don’t have to come in knowing exactly what that is or what you want to do about it. We can start with what’s going on in your life and take some time to understand it.

Sometimes the same tensions, frustrations, or patterns continue to show up in our relationships, at work, or in the way we experience life. Taking the time to look honestly at what’s happening, what might be driving some of it, and what we might want to do differently can be one of the more courageous things we do as men.

Counseling gives us a place to do that. A place to slow things down, understand ourselves a little better, and become more aware of the thoughts, behaviors, and relationship patterns that are shaping our lives. And if something isn’t working the way we’d like it to, we can work together to find a healthier way forward.

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

Over the last 30 years, working with young people has been an especially meaningful part of my career.

Adolescence is a time when a lot of life is happening all at once. New experiences, relationships, emotions, and ways of thinking are beginning to open up, and the way all of that shows up at home, in relationships, or at school can be very different and even confusing. It can be hard for parents to know exactly what’s going on or how to best help.

My longing is for young people to have a place where they can let down their guard, feel listened to and understood, and begin to make sense of what’s driving some of the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that are causing some of the tension.

Through our time together, they can become more aware of themselves and what’s happening around them, so they can feel more grounded, more stable in their relationships, and more confident in how they move forward.

I’ve spent most of my adult life working with people. For more than 30 years, that has included young people, educators, families, school communities, and groups of all kinds. A lot of that work has involved listening, asking questions, navigating difficult conversations, and helping people better understand themselves and one another.

I earned my Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Montana State University and have been a Licensed Professional Counselor in Idaho since 2023.

My work as a counselor is informed by all of those years spent with people, but counseling gives me the opportunity to slow things down and work with someone individually. I value honesty, curiosity, and conversations that get beneath the surface. You don’t need to come in with the right words or have everything figured out. We can start with where you are.
